Michael J. Nelson is not going to die

Two of my favorite SF authors now, John Scalzi, and Charles Stross have posted about Michael J. Nelson's decision to eat only bacon for a month. What saddens me is that both have taken the rather uninformed knee-jerk stand that what Nelson is doing is potentially lethal. Fortunately a few replies on their blogs have pointed out that such a diet, while perhaps being a bit monotonous, is unlikely to do much harm, and Nelson will most assuredly not going to gain weight or collapse of clogged arteries.

I guess what bothers me most is that I would have expected successful science fiction authors to be more open-minded and insightful, and taken a little time to consider the potential that the current popular viewpoint, carefully shaped over the years by farming lobbies, might be wrong.
